Department of Homeland Security

The Department of Homeland Security’s main mission is to secure America’s safety. Green infrastructure has been used as a core part of The Federal Emergency Management Agency’s (FEMA) many hazard mitigation and disaster prevention programs. For example, FEMA provides funding for green infrastructure for communities looking to plan and implement practices that minimize losses caused by flooding.

What is green infrastructure at DHS?

This agency does not specifically define green infrastructure, but uses it as a component of their water and disaster mitigation programs.

What DHS departments are involved in green infrastructure?

The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) works to prepare for, protect against, respond to, recover from, and mitigate all hazards. FEMA provides several grants to states and local governments to implement measures to reduce or eliminate the long-term risk of flood damage and other natural disasters.
