Major Metro Achievement Award Recipient for the
West Central Florida Chairs Coordinating Committee,
Pioneering Regional Transportation Planning

The National Association of Regional Councils (NARC) has chosen the West Central Florida Chairs Coordinating Committee (CCC) as recipient of the NARC Major Metro Achievement Award.

The CCC, composed of chairs of the six member Metropolitan Planning Organizations (MPOs) in Western Central Florida, is a cooperative regional transportation planning board serving eight counties and covering over 6,000 square miles. Working together with a non-MPO county, two Florida Department of Transportation Districts, Florida’s Turnpike Enterprise and three Regional Councils, the CCC seeks to creatively address and prioritize the transportation needs in West Central Florida through the award-winning Pioneering Regional Transportation Planning program.

The program consistently uses a regional approach to address issues on personal mobility, access to jobs, goods movement, emergency evacuation, and growth management. Regional solutions and resources resulting from CCC meetings are incorporated into the local MPO plans and local outreach programs, and are made available for public participation and use.

“Regional coordination among CCC member MPOs and the development of regional planning products was applauded as an exemplary best practice and is recognized as a prototype for local MPOs working cooperatively as a regional entity. The CCC is a unique organization that brings consensus on major transportation issues while retaining each county’s identity and autonomy,” said Lucie Ayer, AICP Executive Director of Hillsborough County MPO. “This award is a tribute to the efforts of leaders and citizens in the region who, working together, are ready for the increased and challenging mobility demands to the year 2025 and beyond,” she added.

The achievement award was given to the West Central Florida Chairs Coordinating Committee at the NARC 40th Annual Conference held in San Antonio, Texas. It recognizes programs that exemplify regional cooperation, coordination and excellence with the involvement of private and civic sectors. The CCC competed with other regional planning organizations from around the country serving a population of one million or greater.
