Dick Thornburg, former U.S. Attorney General, former Governor of Pennsylvania and current Chairman Emeritus of the State Science and Technology Institute, has said that:

"In the last two decades of the 20th century the U.S. economy was transformed in a way and at a speed that few could have anticipated. The 19th century's long-term transition from an agrarian-based economy to a manufacturing-based economy was replicated in an accelerated economy. While traditional agriculture and manufacturing will always be important economic sectors in our economy, today's new economic growth is being driven far more by technology and its influence on this change is a product of national, indeed international forces at work, it manifests itself community by community.

Today, economic development professionals are challenged to develop transition strategies for the nation's communities that strengthen regional competitiveness and increase the American standard of living. The telecast will showcase examples of "best practices" in this area, including, communities that have: (1) developed strategies for moving from traditional industries experiencing job loss to new industries creating high-skill, high-wage jobs; (2) experienced a military bases closure and are in the midst of  a transition; (3) undertaken the cleanup of brownfields, greenfields, and/or grayfields; or (4) successfully implemented broadband deployment assuring they are "wired for the 21st century."
