The telecast will focus on issues raised in an EDA-funded study, "Competitiveness in Rural U.S. Regions: Learning and Research Agenda." Topics to be addressed include:

  • The critical importance of coordinating economic development strategies in rural and adjacent urbanized areas.
  • A discussion focused on alternative approaches for rural America; relying on the once advantageous labor costs it offered is no longer valid due to cheaper labor available off-shore. This will require developing an alternate strategy that includes a series of specialized, strong, clusters that enhance a region's performance. Clusters suited to rural America will also be a focus of the discussion.
  • Enhancing entrepreneurship in rural America and its role in bolstering new economies.
  • How to access federal programs with resources available for rural economic development efforts.
