“Integrating Land Use and Transportation Planning”

Septermber 11-12, 2008

Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning, Chicago, IL

The National Association of Regional Councils (NARC), with assistance from the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) and Resource Systems Group (RSG), held a two-day workshop on Integrating Land Use and Transportation planning in Chicago on September 11-12, 2008.

The workshop, hosted by the Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning (CMAP), was geared toward developing the capacity of high level community and transportation planning officials to integrate current and future trends in land use into their transportation plans, thereby giving their regions more options and opportunity. The workshop explored the impacts of goods movement, housing and development decision-making, financing and other key areas that interlink these two critical areas.

The workshop included an in depth look at the issues that CMAP has been addressing in Chicago, a nationwide, industry-focused session featuring speakers from FHWA and the Congress for New Urbanism, presentations on regional best practices in Denver, Sacramento and Atlanta, and a site visit to Arlington Heights better illustrate the progress Chicago has made in transit oriented development. These interactive sessions were geared toward high level planning officials, going beyond the basics in order to touch on the core issues in integrating land use and transportation planning.
