Under current federal law, locally elected officials in metropolitan regions of 50,000 people or greater are required to plan for transportation in their regions through a designated metropolitan planning organization (MPO). MPOs are responsible for the continuing, cooperative and comprehensive transportation planning process for their urbanized area. In addition, several states have codified a non-metropolitan planning organization that plans for the future of transportation assets in those regions. NARC represents these organizations and their elected and appointed officials through research, professional development, technical assistance and advocacy.
