COMMUNICATIONS DIRECTOR
As part of the Executive Office, the Communications Department seeks to proactively promote and market SANDAG programs and initiatives to residents, elected officials, member agency representatives, business and community leaders, and other stakeholders. The department also manages outreach programs to involve selected audiences in the regional planning and decision-making processes through timely workshops on topical issues, fully noticed public hearings, and ongoing broad public outreach and feedback programs. Easy access to public information is offered through the agency’s Web site, publication of high-quality materials highlighting agency activities, concise oral and visual presentations, and consistent news media coverage of regional topics. Ongoing media activities include timely and informative press releases and press briefings on research findings, project updates, and high profile policy decisions. This includes ongoing interaction with key beat reporters and editors to secure press coverage, and efforts to leverage exposure in publications, advertising, project signage, and other mass media.
The Director is primarily responsible for managing and overseeing the activities and operations of the Communications Department. Duties include coordinating assigned activities with other agency departments, member agencies, and external organizations; analyzing and recommending policies and procedures regarding public and media relations, marketing, and community involvement programs; serving as the spokesperson for the organization; representing SANDAG’s vision, mission, and priorities to outside agencies; and providing complex management support to the Chief Deputy Executive Director and Executive Director.
Qualifications include a degree in communications, journalism, public/ business administration, or a related field, and eight years of professional, public information, communications, or journalism experience.
