Planner III

This is a full- time professional position with the Mid-America Regional Council, the Kansas City region’s metropolitan planning organization and association of local governments. MARC prepares a Long-Range Transportation Plan every five years, including elements for all modes of travel. MARC has developed a Natural Resources Inventory, and is working toward a regional natural resources conservation plan. MARC is a partner with other community organizations in the development and use of a new citizen engagement initiative, One KC Voice.

 

The planner will work with both MARC’s community development and transportation departments to build the agency’s capacity to incorporate local land use considerations into MARC’s regional plans. The planner will be responsible for engaging local officials and other stakeholders and the public in integrating regional transportation and environment plans, both with each other, and with local government plans.

 

The planner will assist in the support of one or more regional committees that provide oversight to regional planning efforts and their integration with local plans. The first phase of the work will focus on the update of the region’s public transit plan, Smart Moves. The planner will assist in developing information to support a comprehensive engagement process involving local officials, other stakeholders and the public. The planner will be responsible for collecting and analyzing information about local and regional land use policies that could affect transportation investments; meeting with local officials and other stakeholders to discuss local plans and policies; and identifying approaches to enhance the region’s public transit system through supportive local land use policies. The planner will work with the agency’s public affairs staff and One KC Voice to engage citizens in the planning process.

 

A master’s degree in urban planning, public administration, geography or a related field with a minimum of three years of successful and progressively responsible related work experience is required. The position requires knowledge of local land use planning principles and practices, strong project management skills and the ability to work with boards and committees. The position requires strong attention to detail, ability to handle multiple demands simultaneously, strong interpersonal skills, excellent oral and written communication skills, and experience with communicating local or regional land use, transportation or environmental planning concepts. The position requires the ability to be effective in working with local government officials, private development stakeholders and diverse constituencies.
